die st. galler künstlerin martina weber (*1975) hat im rahmen des aargauer kuratoriums den spätherbst 2007 in london verbracht. dort hat sie den aus malawi stammenden künstler samson kambalu kennen gelernt. martina hat nun ihren künstlerkollegen mit seinem performativen vortrag ins nextex eingeladen.
martina weber presents:
samson kambalu (*1975), a conceptual artist from london. he will show us his work as a performative live event involving the public. working with video, text, drawing and painting, his work explores the banalities of everyday life and includes short sequences of self-performance in public areas done with a sense of humour. this evening he will also present his new book “the jive talker or, how to get a british passport” – about his father and childhood in malawi. – lets play holyballism.

Der Künstler schreibt dazu: «With The Beatles (2009) is a solo performance using a hand drawn
copy of the record sleeve of The Beatles second long player With The Beatles, released in 1964.
For the performance I will read the text and top and tail it with some fractured excerpts from
Beatles records that my uncle gave me.»
Simon Blackmore bringt die interaktive Arbeit «data sculpted plants» aus Manchester mit nach
St. Gallen. Eine Lichtpflanze wird langsam wachsen. BesucherInnen können dabei Umgebung und
Wachstum beeinflussen. (Bild im Anhang)
«data sculpted plants uses the technique of long exposure photography to capture mechanically
drawn light tracings. 3 Dimensional plant forms are slowly drawn in space. In this space mathematical
rules govern the growth of forms, and environmental factors such as wind and light are replaced by
the presence of invisible electrical activity in the air.»

Pressure Points ist ein von NEXTEX initiiertes,
mehrteiliges, kollaboratives Austauschprojekt. Sei-
ne erste Phase fand im Mai 2007 im damaligen
Projektraum exex in St.Gallen unter dem Titel «Rub
a Dub Dub» mit den britischen Künstlern Jacob
Cartwright, Nick Jordan und Steven McNeilly statt.
Von Mai bis Juli 2009 finden nun unter dem
Titel Pressure Points: BETWEEN TRACKS zwei fast zeit-
gleiche Ausstellungen bei «The International 3»
und «The Salford Restoration Office» in Manche-
ster (UK) und im Badhaus in St.Gallen (CH) statt.
BETWEEN TRACKS bringt Künstler/innen aus
Grossbritannien und der Schweiz zusammen und
konfrontiert sie mit den je verschiedenen kulturel-
len und künstlerischen Hintergründen. Das Projekt
wurde von der Künstlerin Rachel Lumsden (NEXT-
EX, St.Gallen) in enger Zusammenarbeit mit dem
Kuratorenpaar Lesley Young und James Hutchinson
(The Salford Restoration Office, Manchester) ent-
wickelt. Ob aus Manchester oder St.Gallen, alle
Beteiligten arbeiten und agieren ausserhalb der

eigenen Netzwerken und Kunstszenen. So ist BET-
WEEN TRACKS hauptsächlich eine Übung in Diplo-
matie zwischen zwei Kunstprovinzen. Dabei trifft
minimales Understatement aus Manchester auf
selbstbewusste Konzeptkunst aus St.Gallen. Die
Ausstellungen in Manchester und St.Gallen sind
mit einer starken Anbindung an das jeweilige
künstlerische Umfeld konzipiert und so entworfen,
dass den Gästen jeweils einheimische Gegen-
positionen begegnen, welche ihre Arbeiten ein-
betten, verstärken oder ihnen entgegen wirken.
Das Schaffen und Etablieren einer Diskurs-
plattform ist das wichtigste Anliegen von Pressure
Points: BETWEEN TRACKS. Das Projekt führt zwei
unterschiedliche Spuren zu einem Geleise zusam-
men, über das der britisch-schweizerische Regio-
nalexpress für kurze Zeit verkehren wird.
Pressure Points was initiated in 2007 by
NEXTEX. It was launched as a collaborative ex-
change project between Switzerland and the
UK with the exhibition «Rub a Dub Dub» from Brit-
ish artists Jacob Cartwright, Nick Jordan and
Stephen McNeilly.
The second phase of Pressure Points: BETWEEN
TRACKS will take place from May to July 2009, in
which three exhibitions will run more or less back
to back at «The International 3» and «The Salford
Restoration Office», Manchester (UK) and in Bad-
haus, St.Gallen (CH).
BETWEEN TRACKS connects artists from Britain
and Switzerland, confronting them with a con-
trasting artistic and cultural backdrop. The project
has been developed by artist Rachel Lumsden
(NEXTEX, St.Gallen) in close collaboration with
curators Lesley Young and James Hutchinson (The
Salford Restoration Office, Manchester) in order to
explore a collective British-Swiss art-track. Whether
from the Greater Manchester or the St.Gallen re-
gion, all these artists are somehow operating out-
side the main art-centres of their countries in re-
gional areas with their own particular character.
As such, BETWEEN TRACKS is essentially an exercise
in diplomacy between two art provinces, each
counterpart dispatching a delegation in the hope
of receiving answers or echos from the host. Here,
minimal understatement from Manchester meets
self-confident conceptual work from Switzerland.
The exhibitions in Manchester and St.Gallen are
curated with reference to each particular venue
and in such a way, that the guests are matched
with counterparts from the host delegation to
enhance, amplify, and counteract positions; ulti-
mately teasing out dialogues.
The fundamental principal of Pressure Points
is the establishment of a platform for discourse.
BETWEEN TRACKS will fuse two different seams into
a shared track on which, for a short time, the Bri-
tish-Swiss regional express will run.
