Der Ausstellungstitel «What’s the Difference?» bezieht sich nicht nur auf die neue Situation im Zentrum für Kulturproduktion, das seit Januar von der Stiftung PROGR weiter geführt wird und mit der Renovation der Ausstellungszone und neuen Galerien im Erdgeschoss ein neues Gesicht bekommen hat. Quynh Dong, Omar Ghayatt, Anastasia Katsidis, Tobias Spichtig und Sislej Xhafa thematisieren in ihren Arbeiten kulturelle Unterschiede und greifen bewusst Vorbilder aus der Kunstgeschichte und Populärkultur auf, um diese mit persönlichen und aktuellen Referenzen aufzuladen und neu zu interpretieren. Das Spektrum der Inspiration reicht von Leonardo da Vincis Skizzen bis zur italienischen Pop-Schnulze, von Andy Warhols Selbstinszenierungen bis zu Porträts von Marlene Dumas.

The title of the exhibition, «What’s the Difference?», refers to the current condition at the Center for Cultural Production that is being run by the PROGR Foundation since January. In the course of a major restructuring, its ground floor has been given a new look, new galleries have moved in, renovated their spaces and joined to open together as part of a new public gallery zone. In that context, the Stadtgalerie has invited artists Quynh Dong, Omar Ghayatt, Anastasia Katsidis, Tobias Spichtig and Sislej Xhafa whose works examine cultural differences and specifically take on cultural and historical icons to reinterpret them in the context of new references – the spectrum of influences ranges from Da Vinci’s sketches to Italian pop songs, from the self portraits of Andy Warhol to the portraits of Marlene Dumas.

Als Projekt der Abteilung Kulturelles der Stadt Bern unterstützt die Stadtgalerie das regionale Kunstschaffen im Austausch mit nationalen und internationalen Positionen und vermittelt in regelmässigen Ausstellungen und Veranstaltungen aktuelles, experimentelles und anspruchsvolles Kunstschaffen an ein lokales Publikum. Sie betreibt ausserdem ein Kulturaustauschprogramm für internationale KünstlerInnen und KuratorInnen, u.a. in Zusammenarbeit mit der Kulturstiftung Pro Helvetia.

Stadtgalerie is a project of the Department of Cultural Affairs, Bern. As a venue for art events and exhibitions, its goal is to present and promote regional as well as national and international artists to a local audience. It runs a program for cultural exchange, offering residency opportunities for foreign artists and curators through a collaboration with Pro Helvetia, the Swiss Arts Coucil.

‘A True Story’

Ausgehend von Definitionen des Begriffes ‘Räumlichkeit’, erforscht die Künstlerin Maia Gusberti (1971/CH) die Beziehung zwischen Einbildung und Abbildung im Spannungsfeld sozialer, kultureller und geographischer Kontext- verschiebungen. Ihre Arbeiten wurden vielfach prämiert, zuletzt mit dem Aeschlimann Corti Stipendium 2010. Maia Gusberti lebt und arbeitet momentan in Bern.

Der Schuh

Im Rahmen der Sanierung des Volksschulhauses Laubegg wurde Haus am Gern von den Stadtbauten Bern zu einem Wettbewerb für Kunst im öffentlichen Raum eingeladen. Bei der Begehung des Schulhauses fand Haus am Gern im Bauschutt aus dem Dachboden einen alten Kinderschuh und nahm ihn mit nach Hause. Von da an wurden Rudolf Steiner und Barbara Meyer Cesta massiv vom Pech verfolgt. In ihrer Verzweiflung schrieben sie dem Schuh die Schuld für ihr Unglück zu. Und um den Fluch abzuwenden beschlossen sie, den Schuh als Kunst-Projekt getarnt wieder ins Schulhaus zurück zu bringen. Bei der Präsentation erzählten sie ihre Geschichte, stellten das Projekt vor und liessen den Schuh im Büro des Schulleiters zurück. Sie gewannen den Wettbewerb und das Glück kam zurück.
Der Schuh wurde – gemäss – Projektvorschlag – im Schulhaus an zentraler Stelle auf einem massiven Steinsockel unter Panzerglas ausgestellt. Ein kurzer Text auf einem Schild regt zum Nachdenken über Herkunft und Kraft des Schuhes an:
«Kinderschuh, um 1917 Es gibt Leute, die sagen, dass dieser Schuh 2008 beim Umbau des Laubegg-Schuhlhauses im Dachstock entdeckt wurde. Es gibt Leute, die denken, dass dieser Schuh eine unheimliche Geschichhtehat. Und es gibt Leute, die glauben, dass dieser Schuh besondere Kräfte hat.»

Haus am Gern liess in einem von Gergory Gilbert-Lodge dezent illustrierten Taschenbuch vierzehn namhafte Schweizer AutorInnen über das Woher und Warum des Schuhs fabulieren. Das Taschenbuch erschien im SJW-Verlag und wird schweizweit in den meisten Schulhäusern vertrieben. Das Taschenbuch verortet den Schuh und das Laubeggschulhaus für alle Schulkinder, die «Der Schuh» lesen. Als erste Herausforderung dazu wird im Prolog die Geschichte von Haus am Gern geschildert. Ob sie wahr ist, bleibt dahingestellt. Ob der Schuh seltsame Kräfte hat, ebenfalls.

…Ce qui se dessine comme une mise en péril fait toutefois naître une nouvelle tâche pour l’art et l’artiste : en effet, l’art peut être le seul et unique domaine de l’existence où il est encore possible de transformer le monde et le réaménager à partir de son libre-arbitre individuel, pour motiver l’humain en tant que force agissante et, par là, donner, encore et toujours, un sens et stimuler les sens. Dès lors, il apparaît que l’art deviendra de plus en plus un préalable incontournable à la destinée humaine. Les alternatives à l’activité humaine se situent au niveau de la pensée entre programme et fantaisie, au niveau du ressenti entre vécu et intériorisation et au niveau de l’action entre l’automatisation et la création sans limites ni contraintes.

Si tel est le cas, alors l’art devrait peu à peu quitter sa place en marge de la société pour se positionner au cœur des sociétés: dans l’instruction comme dans la production ou dans les domaines sociaux, etc. Car s’il est vrai que, d’un côté, l’artiste se sent impuissant face au peu de cas qui est fait de son oeuvre, d’un autre côté, il apparaît toujours plus évident que la société ne parvient plus à résoudre sans l’aide de l’art les problèmes qu’elle auto-génère en science, en économie et en politique.

Alors qu’arriverait-il si les artistes se voyaient et s’engageaient à nouveau comme des “exemples” pour le monde de l’économie, de la politique et de l’instruction à l’égard du simple mortel? Ils n’auraient pas à dire ce qui a un sens ou pas, ils se contenteraient de montrer comment il est possible pour un simple individu d’activer ce qui a un sens à l’aide des sens.

Ahmed Kamel (EG) uses photography, video and drawing as ways to address social issues and to express his interest in domestic and urban life. He was born in Cairo in 1981 and has studied painting at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Cairo, graduating with a BFA in 2003. He participated in a number of exhibitions, workshops and residencies locally and internationally. He is interested in how society constructs and idealizes identity through means of visual representation that can act as markers of people’s social and cultural background. Ahmed was invited for a three-month studio residency (March – May 2010) at PROGR by Pro Helvetia, Cairo.

A spiral usually emerges from a small point; dramatically moving and growing like a snowball. It might get intertwined and spread like cancer, or it might appear agile and systematic. In any case it is a complex composite, and the conflict between its lines is not easy to solve, whether it is an inner or an external, multi-layered conflict. This fluent dynamic of the conflict constantly seeks its own escalation, leading to its core or to an undefined position within its endless possibilities.»

«Laws should follow basic principles: fairness and equality. When a law is passed, it makes clear what is legal and what is prohibited, and becomes justice by itself – but it might include discrimination against certain individuals, minorities or even society as a whole. Such unbalanced laws are designed, constructed and produced in dictatorships as well as democracies, in certain cases with the excuse of necessary self-protection and the defense against perceived threats posed by others.
The text used in «By law» is a translated paragraph from the emergency law that has been in place in Egypt for almost 50 years. Recently it was extended for another two years.»
